Screens in Feed Mills — Why They Matter and What They Do

After pelleting, cooling and crumbling there is still unbound fines and uncrumbled oversize in the feed. Both cost the bag its value in the buyer’s eyes — and the screen is the last gate before packing.

How an oscillating screen works

The screen oscillates — a rocking motion that passes pellets of the right size and holds back everything else. Fines that never bound are separated out, oversize that never crumbled is held back, and only uniform pellets reach the bag.

The gain is not only quality

Separated fines go back to the pellet mill and are pressed again; oversize goes back to the crumbler. So the screen does not only raise product quality — it cuts waste: what would have left in the bag reducing its value returns to the line and becomes product.

A second use: cleaning raw material

Screens are also used before grinding to clean raw material of stones, string and debris. That is a stage many skip and then pay for in broken hammers and torn screens.
